Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Kindergarten to 20 students at a Title I elementary school, in East San Jose, California. Most of my school's population qualifies as low income and all of my students receive free lunch.
Many of my students begin school below grade level. An overwhelming percent of my class has not attended preschool or even been in the school setting prior to this year. They have had little practice in developing vital pre-academic skills, especially social skills.
To help bring my students up to grade level, I am asking for a sand and water table. Children will be able to use this table during free choice, or center time, and during recess. Center time allows students to build and strengthen social interaction skills, such as sharing. Children who use this center learn to talk and listen to one another, compromise, problem solve, and learn the necessary social skills to be successful in school. This table is a great tool for promoting peer to peer interaction.
A sand and water table is not only beneficial in developing social skills, but also for academic learning. With the sand and water tools, students can measure volume, build structures, create and test experiments, build hand eye coordination and improve their fine motor skills through finger, hand, and arm muscle use. They can even learn upper and lower case letters while practicing hand-eye coordination with the "fishing" set.
As proven time and time again, learning is best accomplished through play, especially for young students. This sand and water table will provide a fun and interactive way for learning. This table will not only help my 20 students, but another 20 additional students in the afternoon Kindergarten class, as well and numerous students for years to come.
