I teach 4th grade in a Title I district. The students in my class come from very diverse backgrounds. 75% of them are not reading at grade level in a class of 25. Fifty percent of my students are ENL learners. Many of them have basic reading, speaking and language development. The students in my class also struggle with writing and math. The students in my school face many challenges and their normal is not our normal. They have to go home to either a single-parent home, to a guardian and or shelter. At home, my ENL students do not have support to do homework because many of their parents do not speak English.
The only learning most of them do actively is in school.
At home the day's learning is not reinforced, homework is usually not done, or partially done. Their skills are poor and this is the reason I am asking for a Chromebook to help with my reading and math small group. I currently have 3 Chromebooks to use in my class, but my small groups are grouped in groups of 4, which makes it hard to work on a skill/s.
My Project
Teaching in a diverse classroom with 50% of your students who are English Language Learners and the other 50% are students on the cusp is very challenging. Working in a title 1 district where classroom support is very minimal, it is up to us as teachers to help students become successful, confident and life long learners. That is why I am asking for 1 Chromebook to help me make my small groups equitable. I currently have 3 Chromebooks and working with students in a small group takes at least 3/4 days for all students to finish a task. In reading groups, I use the Chrome Books to monitor students reading comprehension using "Readworks.org, read theory, reading a-z" to name a few. This way I can check for understanding of a skill/s (main ideas, sequence, compare/contrast).
For math small groups having Chromebooks helps with diagnostic assessments, I can re-teach my lesson using the Chromebooks on "Zearn, Prodigy, Math Playground".
Having the extra Chromebook I can track all students' progress and they can also view their progress. They can work in groups of 4 rather than 3 and this way all students will have rotated in small groups in two days rather than 4.
