Have you ever become engrossed in a new topic through technology? My students have, whenever we're able to use chrome books. My school consists of about 600 students coming from a middle to upper middle class neighborhood. I've been teaching for 20 years now and one thing that rings true for my school is that the students are enthusiastic and have a strong desire for knowledge.
As many schools in other districts have chrome books regularly available for their students, my school has a limited number as we are small and technology funding is not regularly available.
In order to use them, we have to sign up for a chrome book cart that all science classes have access to and more often than not, it is being used by another teacher. Having chrome books, that are only meant for my classes, will complement my teaching to a level much higher than without them. The chrome books are excellent tools for developing scientific skills in problem solving, presenting information and collaborating.
My Project
We are just one Chromebook cart away from having a Chromebook available for each student in science. My students have been regularly completing inquiry-based lessons where they are discovering many new concepts- Climate Change, Ocean Acidification and Thermal Energy. Chromebooks enable my students to access the information more effectively and learn the material on a deeper level. Currently, however, we must sign-up for a department-wide Chromebook cart that might not be available when we need it. We've had to adjust teaching our units based on this availability calendar. Please help in building a cart that can be counted on any day of the school year.
