Building Science and Mathematics Exploration in Special Education
My students need building materials to engage and expand their thinking in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) allowing them to learn through exploration and creativity.
My students are in grades 2-5 in a self-contained setting for kids with Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities.
My students are a diverse group of learners coming from different neighborhoods, cultures, and economic levels.
Students are brought in from an extended area for behavior intervention. All of my students are in need of social skills instruction and interventions before returning to the general education classroom.
My students are at-risk and that requires us to think out of the box to make them successful in the classroom. My students need accommodations and modifications to the traditional learning environment to show their success.
My Project
With these stem materials my students will be able to explore math and science in a hands-on and engaging way. Students will be able to work cooperatively to explore and discover with others.
The activities and materials I have selected will foster an educational learning environment where students can think critically and use their creativity to problem solve while interacting with peers.
The use Magnetic PicassoTiles, Legos, Bristle Blocks, and lights in conjunction with materials we currently have will also help with student’s fine motor skills, focus on creativity, cause and effect skills, along with problem solving skills. Children will be able to work with these materials to expand on their scientific and mathematical thinking.
