Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At American High, we serve kids from tough backgrounds. Some of them have a hard time getting to school. Some of them have a tough time finding the safety that we all need to be productive members of society. As the sponsor for our Student Government Association, I want to help create a home.

Over the past several years, we have had a tough time building camaraderie and school spirit.

Our kids, however, really need to feel like they belong somewhere. These are kids with a lot of untapped potential. I know that one of the ways we can tap this potential is to get them motivated to do well in class and make a difference in their community. They want very much to be the change they wish to see in the world. The change starts here.

My Project

My students will use a Cricut, Cricut materials, cardstock, paint and paint brushes to continue our efforts at building community. This will help us add a beautiful touch to spirit week and other events by allowing us to personalize signs, banners, posters, and other materials. In addition, my students have great ideas for spreading a little happiness and sunshine by distributing cards and other goodies to people in our school and neighborhood community who need a little love. Their ideas are limitless—they just need the stuff to make it happen.

This project will make a difference by allowing our students to spread school pride, enhance school spirit, and grow friendships.

The high school experience is something that they will cherish even more when they are able to take an active part in making their school community even stronger. Spreading joy is, without a doubt, a life skill. These children will benefit for years to come from having the opportunity to understand the real power of relationships.
