My students need stuffed animals, pillows, a couch to read, and a colorful carpet as part of their library as they recover from Hurricane Harvey.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classroom are active, curious, enthusiastic, eager to learn, and leaders. Our school is a Title I, PK-5 campus with an enrollment of 76% Hispanic students, 21% African American, 2% Caucasian, 1% Asian American with a 29% mobility rate. Our campus is 91% economically disadvantaged and 100% of our scholars receive free lunch. We serve 42% English Language Learners who are considered Limited English Proficient (LEP).
As students come back to school, my goal is to create a safe and positive learning environment, where students are motivated and stimulated to learn.
The majority of our scholars lost their home during the flood that came with Hurricane Harvey. While I am concerned about building a strong foundation for my students, we are also confronting the post-traumatic stress produced by this natural disaster.
My Project
Transitional objects can play an important in students' work and play, and can be utilized as way for them to express themselves, for they can neutralize the atmosphere creating an experience that is not challenging but rather calming. These stuffed animals are going to be used in many ways, such as their reading buddies and also they're calming buddies in times of stress.
Imagine how it would feel to be evacuated from your home, whether is temporarily or forever and losing all of your belongings?
That was the case for many of my students. Some even had to be rescued by helicopters! They had to leave the only home they have ever known. Now as they are coming back to school, my goal is to make their second home as comfortable and comforting as possible. The animals would be located in the library, an easy access for them to grab when needed.
I want to make the library as cozy as possible, yet exciting for them to sit down and enjoy a good book, just like they would at home. I have chosen a fun, yellow rug that will be very stimulating for them, as well as nice little couch their own size so they can sit down and read with their neighbor. My goal is to create a fun, reading environment where they can fall in love with reading, and keep their minds off other distractions.
Asides from creating a fun library, I also want to create a safe space where they can spend time alone if they need to. So I chose a tent with some books about emotions, for them to reflect how they feel, as they are bouncing back.
Help me rebuild their second home that got destroyed during the flood!
