In my Title I, first grade classroom, I have 25 children from an ethnically diverse background. Many of them are struggling during this pandemic. Quite a few parents are essential workers and, right now, several parents and two students have COVID. These children are incredible, showing up to school, no matter how it changes, showing dedication, flexibility and resilience. In Salem, Oregon, the incidence of COVID was high enough that our district moved to distance learning in March. We did not return to the classroom last year, nor are we likely to do so this year.
When I hugged my students goodbye in March, I did not know it would be a permanent goodbye.
I sent them home with books, thinking that the books would return when the students did. That is, of course, not how the situation resolved itself and our class library needs refurbishing. My current students need real books to increase their engagement and provide a boost as they learn to read remotely especially as they missed quite a bit of kindergarten.
My Project
By giving a donation to this project, you will be helping to create independent reading at home with books that match each child's reading needs. With a refurbished class library, children will have access to books at their level in their own home.
Snuggling up with real books will help children build on what they learned during their abbreviated kindergarten experience.
Students will be mailed books that match their needs. I will include a self addressed stamped envelope so that students can return the book or exchange it for a new one, if they choose.
I cannot think of a better to motivate children as readers while also reminding them that they are loved no matter how school looks this year.
