Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every day my students make me laugh. They crave interaction and creativity. Their personalities truly shine when we are engaged in role playing, drawing, and/or speaking. Whenever my students see new pictures or activities concerning history, though, they are especially engaged. The class becomes animated and loud with their on-topic discussions. They all want to share!
Even though they are in "that awkward adolescent stage" of their lives, they continue to inspire me with their resilience and thoughtfulness.
With 82% of students coming from low socioeconomic homes, they sometimes do not have all the materials necessary for success. As a teacher, I see students come to school without backpacks, clean clothes, or their homework done. I cannot blame them for these faults. Instead, I praise them for showing up each and every day ready to learn. With their genuine love of school, it makes my job so rewarding.
My Project
The basic classroom supplies I've listed are meant to open young, developing minds. With the right materials available, such as coloring pencils, many of my students will go out of their way to express themselves through their notes and journaling.
My goal as a classroom teacher is to build relationships with students in order to build their self-esteems and show that I care about them.
Journals provide a place for students to write their thoughts, assignments, draw/color in their notes, and have a safe place to store their ideas.
With so many students in a classroom, it is hard for me interact with them individually. With journals, I can help students keep track of assignments, complete quick-writes, and have mental check-ins periodically. I could offer students opportunities to express themselves without peer judgement, offer advice (if they ask), and build relationships with each of them through positive comments/feedback.
