Meet the students in my English classes for the 2018-2019 school year. These 120 (or so) students are a driven, creative, and clever group looking for new opportunities to challenge their thinking both in and outside of the classroom.
These sophomore and junior students vary from voracious readers to those who find challenges in keeping up with the dense canonical texts of the required classroom curriculum; it is my goal to help these students build a love of reading by not only providing them materials but also by building a classroom culture that highlights reading as a choice, not a chore.
My Project
It is important for me to be able to provide my students with access to highly engaging and relevant books at their fingertips. Many of my students are disengaged from the reading culture and the ability to read deep and wide is so important to every child's future. In fact, according to Penny Kittle in her book, Book Love, students should be reading at least 200 pages a week in order to prepare themselves for successful future careers. Sadly, some students barely make it through the required classroom material because they are so disengaged and unmotivated to read the texts they are assigned.
I am requesting these books in order to encourage my students to develop their reading stamina and to build a culture of reading as a choice, not a chore, in my classroom.
This collection of books intentionally ranges in difficulty, genre, and authorial perspective in order to help students extend the boundaries of their thinking beyond the confines of my classroom, helping them to grow not only as young adults but also as global citizens.
Fulfillment of this project will mean books in the hands of students who will truly benefit from the ownership and autonomy reading for choice offers. The books will also remain part of my classroom library, solidifying their ability to entice and engage readers for years to come!
