In order to become a great reader you have to practice, practice, practice; and my students are ready to start practicing!
I am a Kindergarten teacher from a very small, rural town. My school is in a high-poverty area that has faced a lot of cut-backs due to the economic situation of our state. We have no extra funding for class projects and the students here are missing out on a lot of the hands-on, student-centered activities that make learning fun.
My students have been working on letter sounds and are now using these pre-reading skills to blend and make words. They are excited about what they are able to do and I want them to continue to build on this important ability by reading as much as they can at school and at home. Unfortunately most of my students do not have their own books. I lend books out regularly, but to a child it is not the same as having a book that is their own.
In order to fix this problem I would like to create a Reading Buddies program in my classroom that would build up my student's reading abilities and allow them to have books to keep. I have chosen 18 books that match books I already have in the classroom and will need two of each of these books.
I plan to put the children in my class into pairs, or "buddies", which will read aloud to each other during our literacy time. Both students will take one of the books home, to keep and read with their families; and leave one book in the classroom to read with their buddy at school.
By having the same book at home and school they will get the repetition that is so important in becoming a good reader; and by reading aloud to each other they will build on oral language fluency. Once the buddies have mastered the first book I will give them a new book. At the end of our Reading Buddies project all of my students will have two books of their very own!
I believe that this project will be a great way to encourage my students to read. They are already excited about their new skills and having a book of their own will only make them more excited. The repetition that this reading project will offer them will build on their comprehension level and will help them learn to read for enjoyment, which is something that will last a lifetime!
