Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have about 30 STEM students, 60 Robotics students, and 10-20 in our after-school STEM program. Although my students come from a variety of backgrounds, including a large portion of socioeconomically disadvantaged students, the hands-on experiences keep them engaged and learning.
A team of our STEM students recently competed in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, making their way to National Finalists and receiving the Community Choice Award!
One of my goals as a STEM educator is to integrate the STEM fields throughout various topics of study including history, civics, art, and more! Our student population consists of about 50% females. However, our STEM program is only about 15-20% female. Through innovative projects and STEM awareness, I am hoping to balance the ratio of male to female students in STEM fields.
Our school has a large population of EL, minority, and low socioeconomic students. As a Title I-funded school, 100% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. They are 74.6% Hispanic, 50.2% female, 0.92% on 504 Plans, and 1% are homeless. With such a high percentage of EL and low socioeconomic students, laboratory experiences and hands-on learning is an excellent way to bridge the gap in their STEM education.
My Project
Our robotics students have been learning about prosthetic hands and the different technologies used with them. They worked with prebuilt hands to see the parallels between a prosthetic and a real human hand.
These materials will be used for students to build their own version of a prosthetic arm.
The servos will connect to a string that runs along the arms. When the servos turn, they will pull on the strings. The strings will be attached to the fingertips and cause the fingers to flex when pulled. This project will give students hands-on experience with prosthetics and build an awareness of how they work and why they're needed. This will also help with their social emotional development as they develop empathy for the needs of others.
