I teach two sections of an early childhood special education (ECSE) class. There are currently 22 children enrolled in my classroom. There are 5 girls and 17 boys in my class. There is a max of 24 students for my program and my classroom generally fills up in the fall. Our day is very busy! Preschool-aged children are naturally curious about their environment. My classroom is designed to help my students explore different items while developing language and social skills. They love listening to stories, playing games, looking at books, singing songs, building with blocks, and creating art.
My students are 3- to 5-year-old children with special needs in an ECSE classroom.
The majority of my students have language impairments and/or behavior difficulties. They are very curious and energetic students who love to explore. Our daily routine and use of visual supports in the classroom are very important to help my students develop and learn a language. The classroom is housed within an elementary school which is a Title I building. I have 2 assistants in my classroom who help make the day run smoothly.
My Project
Each week my classes have an opportunity to go to the gym for gross motor time. They love to move! My students love to throw balls, kick them, and chase the balls around the gym. Adding this net to the gym will provide a target for my students to aim at while working on their gross motor skills.
Movement activities help my students develop and strengthen their muscles especially in their core which is vital for future fine motor development like writing.
The net in this project can be used for throwing and kicking skills. My students will be excited to have a net that they can reach and to make a basket. Having gross motor time is important to not only be active and build muscles but it will help my students focus better in the classroom during learning tasks and circle time.
