I am a speech-language pathologist at the preschool level. This is my first year out of my graduate program, and I am enjoying getting to know all of my students. They are all eager to learn skills to help them grow in their communicative competence.
At the preschool level, I am helping children obtain the speech and language skills they will need to access the kindergarten level curriculum in a year or two.
My students have a variety of speech and language needs, and research indicates that early intervention will be beneficial to their future academic success.
My Project
I am working to build a library of materials that will promote receptive and expressive language skills in the preschoolers I work with. Many of my students have difficulty expressing themselves and/or understanding what is said to them. This can cause frustration for students, their teachers, and their families.
By engaging in activities that promote using words, combining words in meaningful ways, and understanding words, my preschool students will work on their individualized goals while having fun.
Activities that employ visual supports and manipulative elements are especially helpful for the preschool age group. Many of my students are new to the classroom environment, and have difficulty attending to worksheets, flashcards, and other traditional academic activities. These materials and activity kits would be a major support for my preschool speech-and-language therapy students.
