Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach special education at a comprehensive services site in Northern Virginia. Our site meets the social, emotional, behavioral, and and educational needs of students with disabilities. I also support students with other learning needs. While they may need more support to be successful in school, they still make me excited every day about the future.
My Project
Students across the country have struggled to adapt to the return to school. My students have been no different. Students have been struggling with using appropriate classroom behavior and coping skills when they have experienced difficult emotions. I plan to target these behaviors and build financial literacy by building classroom economies.
Students will earn tickets by demonstrating appropriate classroom behavior and positive coping strategies.
They will then pay "rent" and "taxes" out of their ticket salary to learn life skills. They will be able to save and budget money to buy goods such as fidgets, candy, headphones, books, as well as privileges like being the class DJ, bringing a friend to lunch with the teacher, and flexible seating.
