My students need new and exciting physical education equipment so we can have a fun and progressive program! They need a bean bag set and a giant soccer ball.
I teach in a wonderfully diverse school community at Jason Lee. We are a Title I school with a low socio-economic demographic, where 80% of our student body receives free or reduced price lunch. Our students come from a variety of situations, experiences and cultural backgrounds.
Our students represent the U.S., as well as, other countries and regions from around the world!
Many of our families have limited resources and are unable to purchase basic sports equipment for their children to use at home. This makes the physical education experience they have at our school even more important!
My Project
Our school is a Title 1 school with many of our young people struggling with academics. Several are working 1 to 2 years below grade level and are English language learners. I would like to purchase a set of 12 animal shaped colored beanbags with numbers 1-12 printed on them. My students will be able to practice colors, numbers, addition and subtraction, along with throwing and catching and eye-hand coordination activities. ESL students will get the added benefit of practicing the language used in the lessons I write (color, animal names and numbers).
The second item I would like to purchase for our program is a large, 40 inch, light weight soccer ball. This ball can be used for soccer and a variety of other activities. Students will be able to play volleyball, team bowling, scooter soccer, and several cooperative games!
The beanbags will help students develop physical skills while reaching across other academic areas.
Repetition is the key. Practicing colors, numbers, and animal names in a variety of learning environments will boost the confidence of all my elementary students, not just those in ESL. The soccer ball will be used by all 498 students in our school. This one piece of equipment will allow me to teach countless games and activities to all K-8 students, next year, and for years to come!
