Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the thrill you felt when walking into your science classroom on a lab day? Unfortunately, my 8th grade students don't get that feeling as often as I'd like. With a full set of lab supplies, I know I can provide them with a comprehensive and exciting science education
My incredible students come from a high poverty region in Arizona.
Sadly, many have already experienced more adversity in their short 13 years than most people experience in a lifetime. Each day is a struggle. Simple things like eating and transportation are stressful because the resources are simply nonexistent. Even their school, a place that should be a haven and positive environment, clearly lacks the capabilities to fully provide a rich and diverse education. To illustrate. the school is classified as a Title 1 school where over 90 percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Even with all the challenges that my students face, they come to class each day eager to learn and improve their lives through knowledge. They love questioning and creating experiments despite our limited supplies. Their perseverance and resilience constantly push me to be both a better teacher and person.
My Project
Completing my set of lab supplies and being able to provide incentives for my students will transform my classroom. My classroom revolves around project based learning; however, there are many projects my students cannot engage in because of our supply deficit. A full set of safety goggles and stopwatches, plus construction paper and sticky notes, will enable my students to explore a myriad of projects. Engaging in such projects will ensure that a deep comprehension of vital science skills is achieved. Moreover, although my students are quite internally motivated, it would be wonderful to provide them with incentives throughout the school year. Rewarding great test scores and stellar lab reports will drive them to push themselves even further than they already do.
The combination of a complete lab set and rewards will have a tremendous influence on the success of my students.
They deserve the opportunity to explore every aspect of our curriculum in a meaningful and hands-on way. In addition, rewarding my students when they do well will push them to learn even more about science. If they develop strong critical thinking skills now, then I am certain that their futures will be much brighter.
