Building Our Science Classroom Zoo!

My students need freshwater fish and plants, newts, toads, lizards and pet care supplies for our growing classroom zoo.

My Students

I teach a group of very diverse students, but one thing in my classroom unites them: their love of our classroom pets! Currently we have a few tanks with creatures in them, but they are always asking for more. This project will help fulfill their classroom-zoo dreams!

I teach 8th grade science in a diverse, large, public middle school.

Some live on farms in the country while others live in the city, and a majority of them live in poverty. What all of my students have in common is that they LOVE science, especially animals! Their enthusiasm for finding things out and practicing science keeps me excited to go to work each and every day.

My Project

In my classroom, we currently have two tanks in our "zoo:" one with Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, the other with a fire-bellied newt and a fire-bellied toad. The students have requested that I request another animal to hold (the anoles). They also think that our fire-bellied newt and toad need "friends"--which is actually based in science because they do live in pairs or groups. We would also request fish and plants to fill a large 27-gallon aquarium that was donated to my classroom. In addition to the animals, we are requesting tank-care supplies so that they can be healthy for years to come. My students enjoy caring for, researching about, and holding our pets. They will not only be able to use them for various research projects, but these animals will help me build a culture of caring for our environment and for the natural world.

Your donations will improve the culture of my classroom by giving the students a few more "shared" pets for our zoo.

Your donations will inspire my students to care about science and the natural world, and will give them living things to observe and ask questions about. If this project is funded, my students will love coming to class each day even more to check up on their new friends. My students and I appreciate your support! Thank you so much!
