Help me give my students notebooks for 2nd term. In all my programming classes, students use a notebook to organize their lecture notes, program design, and problem solving. I believe that writing on paper improves conceptual understanding!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The Computer Science students are a diverse and amazing group of students who continually choose electives that push them to solve real-world problems, to work together, and prepare them for life beyond high school. It is my pleasure and joy to teach them daily!
My Project
For every programming class, students use a notebook every single day. The notebooks contain their own handwritten lecture notes, program planning pages, problems solved and code written.
We are basically building our own textbooks!
Students in computer science are learning conceptual information and building problem solving skills. By writing their information by hand, they are hearing the knowledge, processing the knowledge, interacting with the knowledge, and writing the knowledge. This 4 step level of engagement greatly improves their ability to build a foundational understanding. From there, these notebooks become their primary study guide, and programming assist.
I even get messages from college students who are still using their programming notebooks from high school!
