Building Our Love Of Literature Through Book-A-Day
My students need a variety of high quality picture books in different genres that will help us build classroom community, instill a positive growth mindset and spark a creative outlet for their imagination.
To have a parent help with homework, a warm meal on the table and clean clothes to wear to school are things that many of my students only dream of. The students are changing at my school. I once had a classroom full of students who had every advantage in life. Now, over fifty percent are on free or reduced price lunch.
No matter what baggage students walk through my door with, they find a place where everyone matters, everyone has value and everyone has something to offer.
Our classroom is built on respect and a love of learning.
Despite the many difficulties they face, my students see school as a safe place; a place where they know they are loved and cared for. My students are eager to learn, want to do well and are highly motivated by technology and each other.
My Project
Creating readers is one of the greatest things I can give my students. One of the best way to do this is exposure to great literature. I have set aside time each morning for my students to listen to picture books in an effort to read a Book-a-Day, but we are in need of more books.
Picture books not only take my students to a world beyond our classroom, but they help to build their character.
Quality picture books can lead to powerful classroom discussions and play an important part in shaping our classroom community. The books I have selected will help my students to do this. They can explore people and themes that will help build empathy, teach them life lessons and open their eyes to what is possible when they dream big and work hard.
