Curious, imaginative, fun-loving, and creative---these are just some of the words I'd use to describe my new group of students. My classroom is made up of eight smart and endearing young people who have been diagnosed with autism. We are located in a low-income school where I need to buy most of my own supplies. An autism classroom is not run in the traditional way.
My students require a much more individualized and specialized way of learning.
They learn through hands-on materials and visuals. When provided with this type of learning environment, my students can learn and excel! But first, we need some basic supplies to keep our classroom running smoothly!
My Project
The Language Builder Cards Nouns will become an indispensable part our ABA program. Created by a parent and a therapist, with extensive experience with Applied Behavioral Analysis, these picture card sets contain photographic flashcards designed to teach foundation language concepts. They have been used successfully in ABA, VB, autism programs, speech language programs, preschools, day care centers, early childhood classrooms, and homes around the world.
These sets present the pictures from stage one in natural settings, enabling learners to conceptualize and generalize their language.
Not only do these cards promote receptive and expressive language, they can also be used for storytelling and more.
These cards are thoughtfully designed for ease of use. The back of each card is numbered and gives a label and category for the image, as well as suggested activities for the image. The back of the card also features a system to track a learner's progress with a place to note the date that the card is introduced and mastered.
This set has been an effective tool for teaching key language concepts to my students who are diagnosed with autism, developmental delay, and/or speech/language delay.
