VHHS is a small, tight-knit, rural community in South Dakota. Our local school is small, averaging class sizes of about 25-30 students. The community is small consisting of 700 and 300 people respectively, many of which come from rural and low income backgrounds. These students go to school, compete in many activities, and many work jobs as well. These kids are very bright and passionate about anything they do.
The robotics program was started in an effort to give students and outlet for creativity, engineering, community involvement, and programming.
These kids are passionate about what they do and work extremely hard to build and market robots every year during our BEST competition.
My Project
My students current compete in the BEST robotics tournament every fall. We are a two year old program who almost qualified for regions this past fall. We are from a small school and these kids are extremely dedicated to robotics. We currently share all of our supplies with the shop teacher and we want to be able to have our own work space and tools in the science lab!
These tools will allow my kids to design, problem solve, and create through a hands-on engineering based approach.
These supplies will benefit not only the current robotics kids, but robotics kids for many years to come. This program allows students to solve real world problems through programming, designing, and building. This is an extremely collaborative process and to finally have our own materials would be phenomenal.
