This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is a diverse inclusive classroom of low-income students aged 3 to 5. For most of my students, this is their first learning experience. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. We are located in the inner city of Pittsburgh and provide a free comprehensive program that is designed to nurture and support each child as we prepare them to transition to kindergarten.
My students are very interested in learning about letters, math social studies, engineering and science, and enjoy exploring with technology.
They are dreamers, thinkers, and questioners and love to discover new things about the world around them. Despite the challenges they face they come to school each day ready to work and play with smiles and positive attitudes.
My Project
My students need Lego and Duplo blocks in the building area to increase their language and vocabulary, fine motor skills, problem solving and positive peer interactions. Adding these items to our area will provide my students hands-on building materials for opportunities to build and construct, learn cause and effect, develop creativity and socialization.
The building center helps students with their fine motor skills, development of engineering skills, problem solving skills, as well as building on their language development and social skills.
My students will work on technology, engineering, art and math through hands-on explorations. Students can make predictions about their structures, and will use their creativity to design endless structures. Using Lego will allow my little ones opportunities to work with partners or small groups in positive peer interactions while learning to share materials, having back and forth conversations, engaging in dramatic play and peer collaborations. This project will encourage my students to be critical thinkers and develop an interest in engineering as well as showcasing their creativity with their LEGO creations.
