Building Our Future: Marrying Themes of Mathematics & Architecture
My students need a Magna-Tiles construction set, coordinate grid whiteboards, and fraction tiles to help them build scale models and imagine themselves as designers and architects, while learning about 3D shapes, volume, and surface area.
On the cusp of adolescence, the students I have the privilege of learning with, come to school with amazing potential and energy. Tucked away in a quiet and safe bedroom community, twenty miles or so from a major metropolitan area in the center of our country, my students have an intense curiosity about the wider world.
Bright and eager, my students have the drive to explore and understand the way our world works.
They created a project to combat plastic pollution, participate in the national Bluebird Project, and communicate with classrooms across the country and around the world via Twitter.
My Project
My students need a Magna-Tiles construction set, Coordinate Grid Whiteboards, and fraction tiles to help them build scale models and imagine themselves as designers and architects, while learning about 3D shapes, volume, and surface area. Some of the most engaging moments in a classroom are when students have the opportunity to create cross-curricular projects to help them envision how they will apply the skills they're learning in school to important work in the wider world. This year while reading The Shape of the World: A Portrait of Frank Lloyd Wright and The World is Not a Rectangle: A Portrait of Architect Zaha Hadid, my students were inspired by the way the geometry concepts they were learning about in math class were used by architects to create iconic structures around the world and throughout the ages.
The Magna-Tiles construction sets we've requested will help students build scale models, imagining themselves as designers and architects, all the while learning about 3D shapes, volume, and surface area.
With the Interactive Learning Coordinate Grid Whiteboards we will create maps and plans to scale, and we will use the fraction bars to solidify difficult-to-grasp fraction concepts.
