This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The vast majority of our students are currently living at or below the poverty level. Many of our students lack the fundamental skills needed to become proficient readers, writers, and mathematicians. It is often difficult for our students to put aside the conditions and hardships they face at home in order to concentrate on their school work. Many of our students have parents who have not acquired a high school and/or college education. Many students struggle with social and emotional issues.
My Project
Our class library consists of many books that are outdated. We have very few new books that the students are interested in. Extensive research suggests that students who have access to books will want to read more than students who do not have a variety of books to read. Our students come from low-income families with limited libraries at home and selection to motivate them to want to read. I am looking to expand our reading corner and have more choices for students to choose from in their book baggies. Students can also take home these books and return them when they are finished.
