When my 6th graders come to me in the fall, they come with a passion for reading, a desire to engage in hands-on activities, and a strong sense of community. With 30+ students sharing a portable, it takes flexibility, organization, cooperation, and a welcoming environment to allow room for students to learn and grow. These students demonstrate flexibility on a regular basis in our shared space.
Together we dive into novels, explore and expand our writing skills, and engage in a variety of educational activities to prepare for Junior High and beyond.
My students are a diverse group with a wide range of learning styles, skill levels, and special needs. We work together to support one another and collaborate on activities. Their positive attitudes contribute to the welcoming learning environment that we have created.
My Project
As I prepare for my second year teaching 6th grade, my wish is to continue to build my classroom library. If my project were funded, I would be able to provide my students with a library full of award winning novels, classics, and current best sellers. So often I hear students say they can't find anything to read that interests them. They might tell me that they don't enjoy reading because they can't find a good book, or they finished a series and now don't have anything to read.
My hope is that by expanding my classroom library, students will discover a favorite genre, author, or series that they love!
By exposing students to a wider book selection, I want to eliminate some of the misconceptions that there isn't a book out there for everyone. Expanding my library will open up so many possibilities to encourage and continue a love for reading with my 6th graders.
