Mrs. McLeod from Chicago IL is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Building on Books

My students need books that are leveled and will expose them to different genres. My students need books that can be used for both guided and independent reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an enthusiastic group of fourth graders who come to school each day ready to learn. Our day begins with guided reading and literacy centers which could be even stronger with some new books. Our classroom library was inherited from several grade levels and most books are outdated and worn.

We are a title 1 school, and most students live in the low-income area surrounding our school.

Access to a library is not something students have outside of school. Although we have a dedicated space in our classroom, we need to fill those shelves with on-level, appealing books.

My Project

We will be able to use books in our guided reading groups and also for independent reading. A wider variety of leveled books will help keep students enthusiastic about this very important activity and enrich their independent reading time. Books can also be "checked out" of our library to take home and read, and when we have happen to have free time in class, no one will be without a book.

Through guided reading, I have seen that readers of all abilities can get excited about the right book.

A book that is "just right" for it's reader sparks interest and motivates comprehension and deeper level thinking. Reading is the foundation of learning, and I believe the right library will help my students develop this critical skill and also become better learners.
