Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at my school are humble, curious, kind, and enthusiastic. They greatly enjoy listening to read-alouds, participating in community circle time, playing learning games such as “A tisket, A tasket,” rotating through centers, using math manipulatives, playing math games, and sharing their ideas with the class and partners. Most of our students are English Language Learners from low income households. 100% of our students qualify for 100% free lunch. Some students have special needs and will benefit from manipulatives and hands-on activities to strengthen number sense.
My Project
Help our students build a stronger foundation in math fluency and number sense. This Math Kit provides access to daily Math Talks & Number Strings to help students develop "numeracy and the ability to use mathematical relationships to reason with numbers." Practicing crucial strategies such as subitizing, using five and ten, using doubles, and when it's most beneficial to count on or count back, will help students become fluent mathematicians with many strategies to solve math problems. The subitizing cards, ten-frame cards, 20-bead rekenrek, and number path pocket chart included in the kit are the perfect manipulatives and hands-on materials students need to develop a deeper understanding of numbers.
