Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title Ischool located at East Palo Alto. We became a K-8 Dual Immersion school in August of 2012, before that our dual immersion program existed as a choice school inside a regular SEI (Structured English Immersion) school in the Ravenswood School District. Until last year our enrollment was growing, this year our enrollment declined drastically due to relocating to a new site/address which added a commute for many of our families. This made it exceedingly difficult for them as many of them used to walk their children to school every morning as they do not drive, or have any form of transportation.
Our school is a dual immersion school, where our focus is to become bilingual and bi-literate learners.
It is located in a low-income community where most of our students are on free/reduced lunch. Often we see students in the care of grandparents or other family members, while their parents are working multiple jobs. However, I see the dedication and perseverance that our students and families have as they better develop their native language, or are working on adding a second language.
My Project
Due to the current pandemic, our students aren't able to establish routines, especially with reading.
If learning to read is like building a skyscraper, then kindergarten is the year to construct the most solid foundation possible.
Kindergarteners need to learn to build stamina, with the use of a timer they could be accountable for reading independently through distance learning. By having them stay focused on a book and reading for longer lengths of time and providing them with tools such as super heroes capes will help them feel as Super Readers and boost their love for reading.
