This year I will be working with eager to learn, 5-10-year-olds in a remediation/intervention setting and EL setting. Our school is a Title I school located in an area where more than three-quarters of our students come from low-income households and often have difficulty including educational materials into their daily routines. Despite the hardships that many students face, these children enter my classroom every day with smiles on their faces and pockets full of questions.
My students are curious, full of wonder, enthusiastic, creative, and are always ready to explore the world around them.
They find joy in the smallest things, such as reading a new book, opening a new box of crayons and using markers to write on the board. They "light up" each time they learn a new letter, write a new word or identify snap words in their books. They see school as a great adventure where they can share, investigate, experiment, and learn.
My Project
My job this year is to work with an enthusiastic group of English Language Learners. These students have worked hard at becoming fluent readers, but often lack the vocabulary to fully comprehend the stories or books they are reading.
The more vocabulary a student is exposed to during learning, the more likely it is for that student to become a better reader.
Due to not having a strong vocabulary bank, many of my students hesitate to speak or write. I need to find interesting ways to make these students feel more comfortable as they interact with new words. By having pictures and sentences that correlate with the new vocabulary, I hope to create a safe environment where students take chances and grow.
