My students need magnets, wire, and a DC power supply for their motors, plus plywood, wire forming tools and a drill to make the stands.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in the Sonoran Desert near the border of California and Mexico. Many of my students come from families with little in the way of financial resources. Our school has no budget for science supplies and my students are accustomed to doing without.
These students value things that others, in more affluent communities, might take for granted.
Providing materials and equipment to these students is a worthwhile investment, a unique opportunity to give directly to students who will surely notice and appreciate the gesture.
My Project
Building motors is a favorite of my students; form a few loops of wire, wire it into an electric circuit, then hold a magnet nearby and, as if by magic, the coil starts to spin. That moment when the first group gets their motor spinning is always an electric one! This request includes 30 g and 20 g copper wire to make the coils (different thicknesses allow students to experiment with the effect of different sized wire). 3 different sizes of neodymium magnets which will allow students to explore differences that occur with differing magnetic forces (and discover that more is not always better). DC power supplies will provides consistent and changeable power levels and will eliminate the constant cost of purchasing batteries. A wire forming tool will allow for more refined bushings (they have been using a stick and a pliers), and a power drill that will be used to make the stands.
I have funded this project myself in the past.
This grant will provide us with more than the bare minimum of supplies that we have been working with. These items will be used throughout the year to support many classroom projects. The wire-forming tools and drill will be used when we build trebuchets, the DC power supplies when we decompose water into oxygen and hydrogen, and the magnets are constantly used for more things than I can describe.
