Though most of our students travel long miles in buses, mainly on dirt roads, to come to school, they are happy to see their teachers when we greet them at the start of the school day. This reception makes my day a rewarding one as the physical education teacher on a Native American reservation in Arizona.
I'm inspired to see my students carrying on their cultural roots by being active in running and other physical activities.
Though so many of them have been through tough times, they are a joy to be around.
My Project
Recently, the State of Arizona required additional recess time for all students. I'm the #1 fan of this legislation, especially in an area where obesity, diabetes, and other maladies are so prevalent. Unfortunately, our school lacks the resources for sporting equipment.
My goal is to keep all my students, including some with various disabilities, moving during recess with some fun games and equipment.
Whether they're trying something new like ladder ball or a traditional game of soccer, they'll have fun while getting some much needed and very beneficial exercise. After all, physical movement is good for all our brains, bodies and souls!
