Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager first and second grade learners. In this combination class, the students are accelerated and challenged in all curricular areas. Our math lessons are quick and hands-on. The students engage in math talks to explain their reasoning and teach each other.
The students absorb new concepts readily and make connections to their prior knowledge.
They love to do independent math practice and work on math fluency. We incorporate a variety of math activities to build fluency, and this ETA kit will be a valuable addition to our math tool box.
My Project
The ETA math kit will elaborate on our math curriculum by incorporating math talks and giving students daily fluency activities. My students are quick learners, and they love to work collaboratively to check each other and learn from their mistakes. They are little mathematicians who persevere and use their mathematical reasoning skills to explain how they arrived at their answers.
My students know that it's not the answer that's important, but it's how they got to the answer and being able to explain it to others.
I am constantly asking, "How do you know?" to challenge their thinking and make them practice verbal collaboration. This math kit will build our mathematical thinking skills and build our fluency. It will be great especially for my combination class. As I bounce back and forth teaching both grade levels, my students will have engaging activities to keep them actively learning.
