Science learning begins and grows in Transitional Kindergarten or "TK". with my 4 and 5 yr. old students. We live in rural Northern California where every other school district in our county receives extra funding due to being financially disadvantaged. Our school's funding is based solely on student daily attendance. Our students come from hardworking middle income families who do not have much extra income to help support our school. Many are just getting their lives back, after living through one of California's first and worst wildland fires in recent years.
My curious and excited students learn best using concrete tools they are able to manipulate in order to increase their understanding; creating the foundation upon which future learning is built.
I want to provide hands on learning experiences for my students as we focus on Next Generation Science Standards this year to improve critical thinking and problem solving.
Our world needs scientific thinkers. I want my TK kindergarten students to see themselves as scientists, by providing opportunities to help them understand that science is fun!
They will learn about Force and Motion while having opportunities to experiment and solve problems using Hape Wooden Marble Run sets.
These products hold up better than the plastic sets which break easily in little hands. The wooden sets provide opportunities to practice engineering and STEM principles of our Kindergarten Next Generation Science Standards as they drop their marbles through the runs they plan, create, revise, and explain how it works. Trial and error in building the block towers helps improve conceptual understandings young children need.
