Do you remember how you felt when you were able to read a story independently and how proud of yourself you were? My students are struggling readers who need a variety of books that will help build their reading skills and help them become independent readers!
My students are all in an intensive needs classroom in a New Hampshire city public school.
Each one of my students has an Individualized Education Plan and need a lot of support throughout the day in order to be successful. They have a range of disabilities including autism, developmental delay, emotional disturbance and speech and language disorders. Throughout the day my students have a paraprofessional working with them to ensure they are able to access the curriculum and general education classroom. All of my students are included in the general education classroom for all or part of their day depending on their needs and lessons presented on a daily basis. Each of my students has their own strengths, challenges and needs but every one of them is a wonderful part of a great school community.
My Project
Guided leveled reading is a teaching approach designed to help students learn how to process a variety of increasingly difficult texts with understanding and fluency. It provides supportive teaching to help the students understand what reading is and how it works. These colorful, engaging leveled books will help my students develop as readers because they are given the opportunity to develop and use reading strategies, experience success in reading for meaning and learn how to problem solve with the new text independently!
By supporting this project, not only will you will help to enhance their chance of making academic gains in the area of reading, but you will help build a love of books and learning as well.
