Do you remember sitting on the carpet while your teacher read to you? When teachers read with students they bring stories to life. I believe mentor texts are a great to share quality literature while allowing my students to practice the literacy skills and strategies I teach them in class.
My school has a very diverse population.
50% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. For many of our students English is not their first language, nor is it the language that is spoken in their homes. Regardless of any economic or language challenges, we have students who come to school eager to learn and love to read.
My 5th grade class is full of energy and excited to learn. They love to ask questions, and they are always thrilled to try new things. Reading is a focus in class, and one of my students' favorite parts of the day is when I read to them. They can't wait to hear the stories and characters come to life. They love making personal connections to the books I read, and they get excited when their predictions come true. I love to see their enthusiasm for new books.
My Project
The mentor texts provided through this project will allow my students to develop a strong understanding of the literacy skills and strategies I teach while motivating them through the use of quality literature instead of textbooks.
These books will allow my students to explore themes focused on concepts such as multicultural education, friendship, and tolerance while developing a better understanding of how to think about what they read. They will be able to apply the literacy concepts they develop through the use of these mentor texts to their independent reading and writing as well as to all other areas of their education.
My students and I will be able to use these books for years to come, and I will share them with the other teachers I work with. That means these books have the potential to develop quality literacy development for many students over the next several years.
Please support this project.
I will be able to use the mentor texts I have selected throughout the year to help my students develop the literacy skills and strategies they need to be successful in school. They will be able to use the concepts they learn throughout the rest of their educational careers and lives. These books will promote a love a reading while exploring themes such as self esteem, friendship, and tolerance. The books will be a benefit to my students for years to come.
