Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students are thoughtful, curious and eager to learn! We are on the northwest side of Chicago. It is a working-class community that is mostly Spanish-speaking. Almost all of my students are eligible for free or reduced-cost lunch. Our class motto is, "We are safe, we are kind, we are ready to learn!"
As a dual language classroom every student in my class is a developing bilingual speaker.
We are working towards a goal of biliteracy, reading and writing fluently in Spanish and English.
Reading time is our favorite part of the day! Some of our favorite authors are Eric Carle, Mo Willems, Donald Crews, and Eve Bunting.
My Project
Every day I model for my students the reading and writing skills I want them to learn. A document camera and projector will allow me to demonstrate the skills using authentic texts and books at their reading level. It will also allow students to display their hard work for their classmates to see and to feel a strong sense of pride in their work. These students work very hard and deserve to have access to the same resources and technology as other schools in the city. Having new instructional technology in the classroom shows students that their education is as important as every other student in Chicago.
