Our English language learner (ELL) group consists of a diverse group of middle school students, from multiple countries. We want to highlight the importance of their cultural diversity, and the unique qualities they bring to our classroom.
"The more that you read the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you'll go" - Dr Seuss.
Due to their various schooling experiences in their first languages, they represent a multitude of literacy levels in English. Because we are on a middle school campus, our ELL students would benefit from resources at their reading level. Not only will these resources allow our students access to content at their language level, but they will also and confident and valued in their academic classes.
My Project
Books about different world cultures will allow our ELL students the opportunity to shine. These leveled readers provide access to information our middle schoolers are unable to find on our campus - our current books are too cumbersome with language.
Our students are engaged and excited when they get the opportunity to share about their home country.
Adding books, at their reading level, about the different countries represented at our school will allow our ELL students, and others, to explore, learn, and celebrate unknown cultures.
Preserving cultural diversity is an important focus for our school as we continue to welcome more ELL students and their families throughout the year.
