My students are nothing short of inspiring. All of them are English language learners with a wide range of English language abilities. Many are refugees who have never had the opportunity to attend school before or have had many interruptions to their educational experiences. They love coming to school and truly appreciate the opportunities they are afforded here. After fleeing unimaginable circumstances at such a young age, they place a very high value on their educations. They are determined, resilient, and thirst for new knowledge every day.
Our student body represents more than 30 countries and speaks over 25 different languages.
The four most common languages are Arabic, Russian, Spanish, and Nepali. Our school community thrives on this diversity as students simultaneously learn about American culture and the many cultures they all represent. We are a community dedicated to celebrating each other's differences in order to build more compassion and understanding in the lives of those around us.
Statistically, 85% of our population is considered high needs with 70% defined as economically disadvantaged and over 65% of the students speak a first language other than English.
My Project
My students participate in literacy centers every day as part of our reading block. During these centers, students are actively involved in activities to improve their ability to read words quickly and accurately. While students are completing these centers, I am able to pull small groups to provide targeted instruction based on observed needs. Because these centers are completed every day, I need a variety of resources to maintain student engagement and interest.
All of my students are ELLs so continued practice with building and breaking apart words is essential for their decoding skills.
The requested materials will help provide them with the practice they need with letter sound relationships. The four Classroom Magnetic Letter Kits will be used collaboratively as students build words that follow our weekly phonics patterns. The Twist & Turn 3-Letter Word Builders will help students fluently read short vowel words while the Twist & Turn 4-Letter Word Builders can support higher-leveled readers with long vowel words. The Can-Do Reading Games Grade 1-2 Complete Set includes eight easy to play games that reinforce essential skills, like vowel sounds and sight words. Finally, the Roll and Write Word Game will allow students to utilize all of the skills they practiced in the other centers as they build and sound out words across a variety of spelling patterns.
These materials will be a huge asset to my students as they continue to build their decoding skills. With your support, my students will have the opportunity to develop reading fluency in English. Thank you for considering to donate to our classroom!
