Many of my students have faced challenges as they progressed through their education, which encompass learning disabilities, attending school that has Title I funding, experience of homelessness, and many other problematic factors. Aside from this, my students are still eager to learn, put a lot of effort into their work, and want to grow into independent and contributing individuals to their community.
My classes consists of awesome 9-12th grade students with disabilities who learn Applied English, Math, and Transition Skills.
Despite obstacles, our school has been recognized as a Blue Ribbon and California Distinguished School. My students are applying concepts learned in class to real life situations and participating in the community which is geared toward employment and independent living. Students are excited about learning and want to continue to advance their skills.
My Project
My students need cutting boards, cooking pots, skillets, utensils, flatware, cut resistant gloves, and kitchen resources for our Transition Skills class. Students will use these new cooking utensils and cookware to prepare and enjoy certain dishes we would like to make. Students would be able to cut food safely by wearing cut resistant gloves. We would be able to make hot meals on the stove with the new pots and skillets. The stainless steel flatware would be a nice change from the plastic forks and spoons we currently use. Clean up would be much easier by having a few scrub sponges and disinfecting wipes. My students would also learn how to use the different kitchen tools and gadgets properly.
My students are learning how to research and read a recipe, buy the necessary ingredients, and carry out the directions to prepare meals that they could make again in the future.
We go out in the community and use a kitchen at school to practice these life skills. But it gets frustrating when we don't have the resources we need to fulfill these tasks.
