This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
One of the toughest things to do as a reading teacher is to foster a love of reading that will encourage and inspire students to become life long readers. My school is nestled into a tight-nit community where they have little access to relevant, intriguing books. Most of the books we do have are outdated or portray characters and story lines that my students have a tough time connecting with.
My students crave a variety of high interest books that will fuel this love of reading.
In order for my students to continue building their love of reading, we need a classroom library that provides them with books across various topics, genres, and reading levels. They need books where they can see relate with and connect to the characters, settings, and stories. They need books that can spark meaningful conversation and even constructive disagreements. Our classroom library needs a major boost in order to put books that the children will fall in love with into their hands.
My Project
Students will be able to walk into our classroom library and feel like they have a variety of books to choose from instead of digging through ancient, irrelevant titles that are older than they are. Students who are reluctant to read or are just starting to develop of love of reading need to be able to read books that are interesting, engaging, and relevant to them. The more that they are able to connect with the characters or learn information that they find useful and interesting, the more likely they are to see reading as enjoyable instead of as a chore.
