Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classroom come from diverse backgrounds. A majority participate in our free lunch program. Approximately 1/3 of students each year are 2nd language learners. Together they are an amazing group of individuals with various needs, interests, and struggles.
The books in my library need to be beacons that engage and encourage reading, and they also need to illuminate my students to what is around them locally or elsewhere in the world, current issues or issues from the past.
I believe students need a library that reflects their lives and interests, but also the lives of others, and experiences they are not familiar with. Libraries that expose my students to different world views, cultures, family situations, and personal issues and ideas help create a sense of understanding and empathy. Not only do we need our class library to give insight, but it needs to be current and with updated materials. I want to build book love through interesting reading material that leaves students wanting to read more, but with more understanding of others.
My Project
My students are avid readers, and we focus daily on literacy. Each day students come in and engage in Reader's Workshop in which they select a book and read silently. They have notebooks to write down "beautiful words" of inspiration they read, journal and write letters to me about their reading to reflect. Reading takes precedence in our classroom as it is the key to future success in school and in the future. My students love new books to choose from, and a growing library encourages wide reading. Students read in class a minimum of 20 minutes daily, and having books they love helps them to want to take books home to read for enjoyment and because they just cannot put it down. Striving readers, may struggle to find books of interest, but I believe with your help, growing my library will encourage all students to find the perfect books for them.
I want my library shelves to build a culture of empathy and critical thinking, while supporting the love of reading itself.
I want my library to reflect the lives of my students, but also to encourage them to read about lives and experiences they are not familiar with.
Classroom libraries are like a living organism in the classroom. They need to grow and change to meet the reading needs of those who occupy the room. With changing needs, comes a need for book variety to eliminate any book drought.
With your help, we can continue to expose students to cultures and ideas that they do not know about or even understand. It is our responsibility to build book love, and to build empathy amongst our young readers.
