I have a packed classroom this year of twenty-seven second graders! Most of the students live below the poverty line since our school is a Title I status school. Many are from nontraditional homes and being raised by grandparents, single-parents, or foster/adoptive parents due to my state's drug crisis.
They have a lot to overcome, but STAR data shows most to be promising young readers.
They range from struggling emergent readers to competent grade-level readers. Regardless, all are primary students and have a strong desire to learn to read or become better readers.
My Project
Help a child build a growing library of books throughout the school year! Your donation will buy books that act as incentives for students to memorize grade-level high-frequency words throughout the year. The basic step of learning high-frequency words builds confidence that snowballs with their increased mastery of phonics over the year. These are the two pillars that allow a budding reader to bloom! The books purchased through your generosity will provide the necessary practice students need to build reading fluency as they practice reading to themselves, each other, and parents/teachers.
Your donation will buy books that will not only benefit students in the short-term but it will also have a lasting long-term impact.
The short term provides the student with a learning tool to use during small groups, free time after assignments, or recess. Yes, I said recess! Students ask to read a few pages or a whole book to me during recess or if they finish an assignment early. The long term impact occurs when the child proudly takes their library home for the summer, a home that may not necessarily be print-rich. The books become precious valuables the students share with parents, siblings, and possibly even future generations.
