My students need resources to use in order to build the different concepts that we are learning about in class. LEGO blocks are a great way for kids to actually visualize the concepts they are learning.
I am so lucky to be teaching at an urban, public school in Ohio! My students are inquisitive and excited about learning and they work so hard every day. As an inquiry based school, we try to incorporate innovative ways to use technology and other hands-on resources in order to help our students understand the curriculum that we are required to teach. We also have a significant ESL population and these students need hands on resources in order to learn our content. With few resources provided, we look to alternative ways to reach our goals.
Our students have the interest, but not the access to these materials.
This project would give them that access they need to materials that can extend their learning in many different ways!
My Project
The LEGO building base plates, bricks and gears in this request will help all of my students gain a better understanding of the difficult concepts they are expected to learn over the course of the year in our content areas.
By building the concepts using these blocks students gain a deeper understanding as well as a visual idea of the concept.
This visual idea helps them to cement their understandings of different concepts. They can also mold and change what they build in order to incorporate new ideas into their own personal understanding of the concept.
My students will also have to explain what they build as it relates to the concept. This higher level thinking strategy gives them a better understanding of the concepts they are learning.
