Help me give my students the opportunity to create history one brick at a time.

After being a stay-at-home-mom for nearly a decade, I returned to teaching this fall. I chose to work at BA in Richland 2 School District. My students are here because they have violated a significant school rule in their previous school. Some have been in trouble with the law. The first week of school, I brought several of my own LEGO projects to make a connection. I told them LEGO pieces are just plastic, but you can take something small and build something big. Just like their lives, if they don't like what it looks like, they can start over and make it better. As a Geography and History teacher, I also build maps, famous buildings and historical places out of LEGO bricks. I would love to teach the students how to make their own creations and remember History the way I do.
I would love to have the students build models of some of the various cities, buildings and topics we discuss in Human Geography. We are discussing Denmark very soon, which is home to the LEGO company. Making the connections to the real world is the beginning of sparking an interest in world travel. Often times we teach about faraway places and wish we could actually visit. I would love to have the students replicate the cities we talk about in class. I have made a map of Washington DC out of LEGO bricks and using that example, we can make any city in the world on a micro-scale.
