I teach at a title 1 low income school. Over the years we have seen how nutrition affects children's behavior and ability to learn.
The percentage of overweight children in the US is alarming and statistics show obesity can lead to diabetes, heart problem and high cholesterol. Diet affects obesity, learning, and behavior. Experts have pointed out that one solution is focusing on nutrition education to show young elementary students the importance of proper lifestyle. Learning about good health and nutrition is an important life long topic that students can benefit from. It is extremely important for children, at a young age, to learn how important living a healthy lifestyle can be. Leading a healthy lifestyle is essential in disease prevention and for a longer lifespan. Today, the rates of obesity among young children are growing rapidly, so it is imperative that educators and schools help teach children about eating the right healthy foods and about exercising regularly and making the commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
I would like materials to teach students the basic facts about the food pyramid and ways to live healthy. While just memorizing the food pyramid could be considered verbal knowledge, showing its importance is something that helps these students to apply it to their daily lives. The materials I would like for helping me teach this are A Food Pyramid Pocket Chart & Book Set. This colorful triangular pocket chart is a tool for teaching nutrition. The Chart is divided into six different colored sections representing each of the food groups. A Pocket chart Science book is also included. Four Food Groups Game where students can mix and match the four food groups to make a well balanced meal. A Magnetic Food Sets this is Magnetic place settings allow children to create balanced meals with a write-on, wipe-off surface that encourages identification and matching. It includes write-on, wipe-off order pad also and a Nutrition Lotto which is a fun-filled way to teach nutrition and healthy eating! This game features 36 pieces of realistic play food, plus 6 game cards representing the 5 food groups and fats. It would be wonderful to have these materials to help me teach my students about nutrition. These materials would add many hours of educational fun and help our children learn to eat right and live healthier lives. Thank you for reading my proposal.
