This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
When a student walks through the doors of my classroom, the first thing he or she may notice is the large, bolded words, "Push through...let's move."
The 70 fourth graders who come to me each day for English Language Arts instruction have embraced the idea of overcoming struggle and persevering to become successful readers.
Our school is located in the shadow of the Capitol Building in Southeast Washington, DC. Predominantly, our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Yet, each day, they are eager to learn and ready to work hard for what they want.
My Project
In the first quarter of our school's curriculum, students explore the deep question, "What does it mean to have a great heart?" My class learns to answer this question both literally and figuratively through an exploration of fiction and nonfiction.
To kick off this module, students read the biographies of women in history to learn the qualities that can make someone greathearted.
In previous years, we have read articles that I had printed offline with no pictures. That is not the best way to learn about a new era in time particularly if the student does not have much background knowledge.
Instead, I would like to provide my students with real books so that they can immerse themselves in the worlds of women like Wilma Rudolph, Clara Barton, and Elizabeth Blackwell. I chose books at various reading levels so that every student will feel included and be able to teach his or her classmates the lessons learned from the biography.
Now, my students will be more engaged as they learn about some fantastic women in history.
