Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a K4-8th grade charter school in Milwaukee. Our school has over 700 students of which 96% are receiving free or reduced-price lunch. I have a high number of English Language Learners in my classroom.
Within my Project Lead the Way class, I teach all 1st through 4th grade students about engineering and have an elective class for 7th and 8th graders where I teach them all about financial literacy.
Project Lead the Way is a project-based curriculum that allows students to explore math and science in a different way than their regular classroom. Students are faced with real-world problems which they are expected to work collaboratively to solve. The class also allows them to be creative by using the engineering design process.
My Project
My students participate in project-based learning throughout the year in my class. They learn about the engineering design process and complete design challenges. In my engineering classroom, I often give my students fun challenges to complete to keep their excitement for STEM going. With supplies like LEGO bricks, magnetic tiles, Plus Plus blocks, and other building materials, my students can use their imagination to build and create.
Engineering building materials and activity sets are an excellent way to grow students' love of engineering while instilling them with problem solving skills which will assist them in becoming lifelong problem solvers and critical thinkers.
With these materials, my students will continue to develop creative ideas and the idea that there is no wrong answer to a problem if you continue to work hard.
