My students need Io Blocks, Picasso titles, snowflake building blocks, marble run, and wooden Tetris Puzzle to help them learn how to build complex structures to help support our STEM endeavors.
We are a Title I school with a total enrollment of over 700 students in grades PreK-through 5th. Our school is located in an urban setting. The school serves a diverse population where over half of the students are bilingual. Nearly 60% of the students are Hispanic, 17% African-American, and 12% Caucasian. Additionally, 99% of our students qualify for the free and reduced-price lunch program. More than three-fourths of the student population resides in low-income apartment complexes.
I am a librarian at this school who has embraced the makerspace movement and I have transformed my library into a STEM workspace.
Students come to my library not only to check out books, but also to create projects, work with various apps, create videos, and code just to name a few things. My library is happening place, where you will see students learning and exploring new ideas every day.
My Project
As a librarian I have embraced the STEM movement and I am constantly looking for learning tools that will engage my students not only with reading, but thinking too. What I have noticed when older students are given a building challenge most students want to build simple basic shapes and they struggle to see how everything fits together. They might start with an elaborate idea, but when it gets to the building part they quickly readjust to simple shapes, because they can’t figure out how to put it all together.
My students need Io Blocks, Picasso titles, snowflake building blocks, marble run, and wooden Tetris Puzzle to help them learn how to build complex structures to help support our STEM endeavors.
I have specially chosen tools for this project that will help get students out of that funk. I want to expose them to puzzles such as Tetris puzzles, and Io Bocks that will help them to see how different size shapes can fit together. I want to train their minds so they can quickly solve those problems by trying things different ways instead of becoming frustrated and giving up. Then I want to use the marble run, snow flake builders, and Picasso tiles to expand on what they can build and create using unusual shapes.
I believe that if a student can be a reader, thinker, and problem solve they can do anything. These materials will help my students become better thinkers and problem solvers. I see the materials from this project helping rework my students’ brains and laying a strong foundation for future STEM projects.
