Building Friendships With Blocks

My students need more blocks for our construction area to help strengthen our communication skills and develop our understanding of the engineering process.

My Students

I have 18 sweet Kindergarten students this year, some of whom have never been in a school setting before. Each of them have unique personalities but together they make up The Minecraft Raiders (their self-selected class name).

Many of my students have not had opportunities to socialize with peers until this year, and boy has it made our class dynamic interesting!

Together we are working through conflicts, hugging each other when the tears just won't stop flowing, and celebrating our successes.

My Project

Social-emotional development is one of the most important learning goals in Kindergarten. The best way children learn is through play. I have had a block/construction area in my classroom since the beginning of the year but there is not enough variety to encourage spontaneous engineering projects during free play. The small amount of blocks I have often cause arguments and sometimes even lead to broken friendships.

With the addition of plank blocks and magnetic blocks, my students will be able to work through the engineering process as well as practice their communication skills with one another, all while having fun!
