I am teaching Kindergarten in a low income community. My classroom is a diverse ethnicity group. Many of my students are English language learners. My students are always eager to learn new things. They are full of questions about academics and the world around them. They are great at working together as a team to solve problems.
They are excited about school and really enjoy using the classroom materials to learn and grow.
Our school really tries to build a community with our students and the families with after school activities and sports.
My students are in need of blocks like the Color Foam blocks, the Magna-Tiles, and the Rainbow Blocks so they will have blocks of different types to develop and enhance their ability to reason and problem solve. They also need the Community Helpers and Career puzzles to increase their problem solving skills with puzzles of a different type. My students all live in a poverty stricken area where they are not able to have the materials at home to develop their mathematical reasoning. My classroom only has Legos and alphabet blocks and my students have a need to experiment with other building materials.
By using blocks and puzzles children have to engage their brain in mathematical reasoning to make things go together in correct and creative ways.
My students are very good at working cooperatively and learning from one another. Building together strengthens team work and learning from their peers. I know that hands on is the best way to teach children to solve problems and learning through play and discovery is the best.
